Before Sunset is a temporary exhibition concerning the role of the Commonwealth Bank of Australia during the critical years of World War I (1914–1918). Soon after the Bank opened in 1912, the Australian government called on it to manage the raising of funds for the war effort. After the armistice, the Bank played an important role in raising ‘Peace Loans’ to fund the construction of war service homes and the provision of vocational training for ex-servicemen, war widows and nurses. The Bank was required to develop quickly its capacity as a national institution. The circumstances of the war furthered its transformation into Australia’s central bank, which continued until the separation of the Reserve Bank of Australia from the Commonwealth Bank in 1960. The exhibition is complemented by the website From Bank to Battlefield.
