Crossing the Line presents works by Sydney artists Sarah Gibson, Rosemary King, Janet Kossy, Fran Munro, Penny Ryan and Sue Young. It follows from their 2017 exhibition Face Up, also at the Shop Gallery. The show includes new paintings, drawings and installation work, with each artist interpreting the theme in her own way. The works—variously bold, colourful, subtle, beautiful, challenging—look at questions about identity, society, art and change. We see the progression from previous projects pursued by these artists individually and together. Again there are elements of narrative, portraiture and self-portraiture, and references to history, politics and place. Gibson describes her work as psycho-geography, moving between the real and imaginary. King uses textile and objects in exploring notions of Motherhood. Kossy’s work starts with family snapshots but wanders somewhere else altogether, while Munro reimagines favourite paintings from the past with a contemporary twist. Young follows another line, delighting in colour, symmetry and mathematics. Ryan's The lay of the land is unified by contour lines imagined beneath 230 years of Sydney urban development.
