Danica Firulovic’s solo exhibition Nine White Paintings, reflects a continuing preoccupation with symmetrical, repetitive, preformulated, purified painting. Restrained, reserved and quiet, the works articulate overtones of white, to create compositions that are obsessive of repeated rectangular forms. Through the delicate execution of layering white, the lyrical works embrace symmetry to suggest a geometry of the senses at its most tranquil and undisturbed. The subtle white layers painted on linen, which become visible at close range and can disappear entirely when photographed, require patience and slow engagement of the audience. Simultaneously, the work questions the placement and meaning of a painted surface, and what it means to steadily engage with it, in a fast-paced digital world. Therefore, the complexity of these works lies in their simplicity, as they do not aim to capture reality or represent the real world, but instead attempt to evoke contemplation and emotion of the onlooker. Nine White Paintings continues a dialogue with minimalism and draws impetus from literature, such as the deliberate repetition in Gertrude Stein’s work, and from the work of 20th century artists such as Kazimir Malevich, Mark Rothko, Josef Albers, Agnes Martin and Robert Ryman. Danica Firulovic is a Sydney-based artist. In 2009, Firulovic completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts/Arts at the College of Fine Arts (COFA), and in 2013 a Master of Art Administration at UNSW Art and Design. In 2018 Firulovic was a finalist in the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship, and the Hornsby Art Prize. She has been included in group exhibitions at COMA Gallery, Sydney, Langford120, Melbourne, and The Cat Street Gallery, Hong Kong.
