Cartography, the art and science of making maps, has its origins in ancient civilisation. Until the 20th century and the proliferation of satellite technology, our ability to navigate land, sea and sky relied on human powers of observation and an understanding of the patterns of terrestrial, maritime and celestial landscapes. The Gadigal people and the surrounding clans of the Eora Nation have navigated this place we now call Sydney for tens of thousands of years. More recently, it has been mapped by Europeans and is now photographed from space for use on our personal devices. This exhibition brings together a series of reproduced maps with a focus on Sydney, captured through the cartographic traditions of mapmakers. It is a fascinating account of the factors that have shaped our city, highlighting some of the many different ways mapmakers have documented its evolution and guided our journeys.
