The Whitlam Institute will open its next exhibition - Promiscuous Provenance - with a special panel discussion:

Artist Anna Glynn, curator Bronwyn Coulston and environmental scientist/curator Peter Dalmazzo discuss art, history, colonisation, biology and identity.

Anna Glynn is drawn to the work of the early colonial artists, whose depictions of Australian flora and fauna did not represent the landscape as it really was but instead drew on European forms and animals. Promiscuous Provenance encourages a re-examination of our relationship with our colonial past; is our identity as Australians built on a strange hybrid history, a ‘promiscuous provenance’? Using a range of different media, Glynn populates her own antipodean world with strange hybrid manifestations to invoke curiosity and wonder.

The Opening Event will feature a panel discussion including the artist, the curator and a key collaborator. Over the past ten years Anna Glynn and Peter Dalmazzo have worked together internationally as an interdisciplinary team exploring landscape and nature to create site-responsive artworks examining the amplified response that a physical engagement with the natural environment has the power to evoke. In commissioning this exhibition, Bronwyn Coulston brings together her background in Australian history and her visual arts, to work with a local artist who has a significant international practice.

Anna Glynn is an award-winning contemporary Australian artist who draws on a diversified practice that incorporates painting, drawing, moving image, animation, sculpture, installation, writing, music and sound. Her poetic and evocative artworks reflect a strong and powerful relationship to nature, investigating the ephemeral connection and intersection of land and place, of humans and nature.

She has been selected in 2018: for the BOAA, Biennale Of Australian Art, finalist in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize and finalist Ravenswood Australian Women's Art Prize. In 2017 her work was acquired for the Parliament House Art Collection Australia and she was a finalist in the KAAF, Kilgour Prize and the Ravenswood Women’s Art Prize. In 2016 her moving image work won the Noosa Art Award and was a finalist in the Heysen Prize for Landscape. Her moving image work ‘Presence’ was a finalist in the Mandorla Art Award and acquired for the St John of God Healthcare collection, Australia. In 2015 her video ‘The Sun Worshipper’ was selected for the Byron Bay International Film Festival and was a finalist in the Whyalla Art Prize. In 2015 her drawing ‘Awaiting Discovery’ was the recipient of the Kedumba Drawing Award. In 2013 she was a finalist in the 'Australian Art in Asia Awards’ recognising her ongoing commitment to international collaboration. Her film 'The Traveller’ won the Animation section at the 2010 International Film Festival, Ireland and her moving image work ‘Verse Versus’ won the 2009 Australian Historic Houses Trust, Meroogal Women's Art Prize. In 2009 her narrative painting ‘Brave Hunter’ was chosen as the iconic Australian image for the cover of ‘A Concise History of Australia’. In 1998 she received an International Women’s Day Award for contribution to 'Women, Art & the Community'.

Peter Dalmazzo is an Australian environmental scientist, arts worker and curator with more than 26 years’ experience working in the fields of marine biology, biology, estuarine and coastal management, environmental planning and assessment, public place planning, community engagement and education.

Peter’s broad experience extends from scientific research to preparation and review of environmental assessments, flora and fauna studies, threatened species surveys, preliminary archaeological studies, natural resource management plans, community land and Crown land plans of management, teaching and development of teaching materials at universities, presentation of evidence at Commissions of Inquiry, Mining Warden’s Inquiry and Land and Environment Court hearings. Peter has developed and carried out many effective community engagement, consultation and community education programs. He has been Exhibition Team Leader with Shoalhaven City Art Centre completing curatorial training with the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney and trained in OH&S. He has been involved in Anna Glynn’s previous projects, exhibitions and residencies, acting as curator, assistant and working with digital media.

Bronwyn Coulston is Manager – Arts and Culture at Shoalhaven City Council, and leads a small but enthusiastic team to deliver a wide range of exhibitions, public programs, audience outreach and community art projects from Shoalhaven Regional Gallery.

Coulston has more than 10 years experience curating and managing in the museum sector, working across both state and private institutions. She has a keen interest in curating exhibitions that encourage both artistic excellence and have a strong sense of social awareness, working with both local artists and established artists and arts organisations.
