Inner City Encounters - - Chippendale - NSW
The paintings reflect the life experiences and personal responses of the 2 artists to their worlds, much of it an inner city world. Evening at Central by Ross Coady reveals a familiar late autumn sight seen by Ross Coady on his way home from work at Surry Hills on the 470 bus to Annandale. With its bare tree branches and evening blush in the sky framing the familiar stone arches and clock tower. Marita’s Cockatiel’s Morning Tea comments on the incongruity of wild desert birds within an urban inner city life. As the birds perch calmly munching unperturbed in the she-oaks beside Booth Street Cafe in Annandale, while patrons peacefully enjoy their coffee and the traffic whizzes by. Ross’ Voices in the School Yard was inspired by seeing children playing in the Crown Street Public School yard before school. While his Redfern Characters expresses the individuality of the colourful terrace houses there. Marita’s Luminous was motivated by an unexpected experience of a magnificent grey sky when putting out the garbage in a Glebe back lane. While Compassion was based on witnessing an unobtrusive act of kindness on the Glebe Point Road shopping strip. Both artists were founding members of the co-op and still today contribute with volunteer work to help run the gallery.
