Kim Smith: Pelagic Journey - - Edgecliff - NSW
Pelagic Journey by Kim Smith is a sequel exhibition to Smith’s 2005 Pelagic Progression. In this series, she continues to dive into another exploration of the restless power of the vast, deep ocean. Smith facilitates a visual code of the pelagic journey in which fish move from the harmony and balance of their natural surroundings to the disarray and chaos of human capture. Smith masterfully interweaves colour into pelagic imagery, resembling both the soaring freedom in unity and the suffocating nature of bondage. The array of compositions is dedicated to the multiple narratives found in the underwater world and is tell-tale of the ocean and its representation of fear, hope, mystery and power. “For this series, I chose to work symbolically and graphically. Colour was used as a point of entry and departure from the core of my investigation. I painted fish breaking out of, or living within, grids and boxes that represent the supposed safety and constraints of the discrete units that make up our society.” – Kim Smith. Opening reception: 6pm to 8pm, Thursday 7 June.
