Medical Doodles: Visual Notetaking and sharing in the age of Instagram

Dr Carol Ann Courneya, University of British Columbia, Canada

Dr. Courneya will describe her research into the role of art-making in learning the science of medicine. This work is based on a curatorial analysis of the multi-decade repository of “cardiac art” made by Canadian medical and dental students. She will also describe the role of art making for medical trainees and practitioners who submit art to an annual national art exhibit. Her more recent research explores the role of making and global sharing of “medical doodles”: drawings, sketches, paintings that are created by medical students for the purpose of learning medicine. She will discuss the themes that emerged from this research, as well as the implications for medical faculty to address the needs of the visual learners in their classes.

Lecture to be followed by a light snacks and drinks.
