Melinda Clyne - - Glebe - NSW
This is Melinda Clyne’s first solo show since graduating from Sydney College of the Arts last year. She presents a series of works painted on wall mounted Perspex panels, having long abandoned canvas in favor of an ultra-smooth substrate. The paintings depict a playful combination of hard-edged colorful abstraction and a gestural, enlarged brush mark reflecting two distinct and seemingly opposing styles in modernist art history. The juxtaposition of these painted marks creates a tension and drama, and compels the eye to roam over the entire surface of each work, which is counterpoint to the narrow focus of the small screen devices which seem essential to our culture. All the works repeat, and in turn explore this theme of the interaction of opposites. Sometimes the hard edge angles completely constrain the flowing, organic brush mark, and often the brush mark overlays the inflexible, sharp geometrics, perhaps mirroring our own personal narratives of constraining forces over our desires.
