The Triumph Of Venus Exhibition - Frances Keevil Gallery - Double Bay - NSW
Exhibition opening: Thursday 18 October 6 - 8pm To be opened by Simone Whetton, What’s On reporter and ABC Radio Sydney

From the Venus of Willendorf, to the Venus de Milo, to Francois Boucher's painting, The Triumph of Venus from 1740, Venus has played a significant and enduring role throughout civilisation.

In Graeco-Roman mythology Venus-Aphrodite was born of sea-foam, and in her watery female way, as the goddess of love, she was credited with absorbing and tempering the male essence, and uniting the opposites of male and female in mutual affection. (No mean feat!)

But Venus has many other callings. She can assist with military victory, sexual success, good fortune and prosperity. She is also the protector of prostitutes, and can turn the hearts of men and women from vice to virtue.

Recasting The Triumph of Venus in a contemporary context, this exhibition brings together a range of different artists, media and ideas about how Venus might be portrayed today.

Essentially and necessarily a figurative collection, the show refers, obliquely and sometimes humorously, to the many facets of Venus, including love, power, femininity, prosperity, sexuality, strength and a triumphant spirit.

Venus - she's a force to be reckoned with.
